Overview

Academy of Driving, LLC was founded in 2006 by retired Virginia law enforcement officers and is based near downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. We proudly serve the City of Lynchburg and Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell counties. In 2017, Ken Frederick became the sole owner of the school and continues to operate the most comprehensive driving school in Central Virginia. Each year, we have the privilege of providing several hundred students with high-quality driver training, behind-the-wheel instruction, driver improvement clinics, and Virginia driving manual classes. We take pride in these programs and consistently uphold the laws and regulations that govern commercial driving schools. We are licensed and audited annually by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, as required by law. Under Virginia law, licensed professional driving schools are certified to offer classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training for students who are unable or choose not to receive this education through their public or private high schools. Our in-car and classroom instructors are certified Driver Education Instructors by the Virginia Department of Education and licensed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.   • Driver Education

    Complete the Virginia DMV mandated 36 sessions of classroom instruction towards earning your license and becoming a safe and knowledgeable driver. Each of our 50 minute sessions gives you the opportunity to learn the basic principles of driving from professional instructors along with the latest techniques for safe driving. You will have many opportunities to ask questions and experience a hands-on approach to the little things that make a big difference.

  • In-Car Lessons - Teens 16 and 17

    Please note these prerequisites Must complete 36 hour Driver ED Classroom Course if under 18 (sign up here if needed) Must have driven at least 45 hours, of which 15 occurred after sunset Once these requirements have been met you or your teen is now ready for behind the wheel / in-car lessons (i.e. to drive and observe with other teens). While it is not a prerequisite, we would prefer your teen holds their learners permit for close to 9 months before taking Behind the Wheel.

  • Driving Lessons for Adults 18 and Over

    If you have NEVER held a driver’s license issued by any state or foreign country, you MUST hold your VA LEARNERS PERMIT for 60 days prior to taking the DMV road skills test. To WAIVE DMV road skills test and the 60-day holding period for the learner’s permit you Must successfully complete the 36 hour CLASSROOM course (sign up here if needed) Must complete 14 sessions of behind the wheel instruction Must complete road test at the end of the 14 sessions (given in the same car with same instructor) To schedule behind the wheel please fill out student registration form or call us at 434-582-1696. Scheduling depends on location of pick up and your availability We do pick up and drop off depending on location Note Upon successful completion of both classroom and in-car instruction, you will receive a Virginia Training Completion Certificate (Adult Waiver). When presented to the DMV, it will waive the 60-day holding period for Learners Permit and exempt you from road skills testing by the DMV. At this point you will receive a Virginia driver’s license.

  • 3 Times Failure of DMV Road Test

    If you are 18 and above you must complete 14 sessions of in-car instruction in order to go to the DMV to be re-tested. However if you have a certificate of completion of the 36 hours of Driver Education Classroom Course, then you, at your choosing can complete the 14 sessions of in-car instruction (7 sessions of observation & 7 sessions of driving) . Upon successful completion your instructor can issue you a certificate to obtain your license.
