Overview
The most obvious reason our training vehicles have an instructor brake is safety—yes, we use it to prevent collisions, and that’s a given. But there’s a much more important purpose. Our instructors are trained to use the brake as a teaching tool, showing students exactly when and how to apply it for smooth, controlled driving. The distinction is subtle but critical. Mastering proper braking for turns, stopping distances, and speed control is essential for any new driver.
Here’s the big, poorly kept secret in the driver’s ed industry: most instructors don’t receive the training needed to teach effectively with an instructor brake. Because of that, they often demand that students already have driving experience before they even begin the required six hours of behind‑the‑wheel instruction.
