Overview
The most obvious reason our training vehicles have an instructor brake is safety. Of course, we use it to prevent collisions—that’s a given. But there’s an even more important purpose. Our instructors are trained to use the brake as a teaching tool, showing students exactly when and how to apply the brakes for smooth, controlled driving. It’s a subtle but critical distinction. Mastering proper braking for turns, maintaining safe stopping distances, and controlling speed is essential.
It’s an uncomfortable truth in driver education: many instructors aren’t properly trained to use the instructor brake as a teaching tool. As a result, they often require students to have prior driving experience before completing their six hours of behind-the-wheel training.
