Overview

At Grand Prix, we’re proud to offer a rock-solid curriculum that turns out safe, confident, responsible drivers. Our program covers everything from the ground up, starting with an introduction to our school’s rules and the history of the motor car—how it developed through the ages, its influence on social trends, and advances in manufacturing, tires, safety features, and engine technology like anti-lock brakes and twin cam 16-valve engines. You’ll practice basic driving maneuvers: staying centered in your lane, maintaining smooth speed control, making squared-off left turns and rounded-off rights, and mastering the hand-over-hand steering method with solid eye-hand coordination. We emphasize sound procedures like proper mirror use, a 12- to 15-second visual lead, and keeping at least three seconds of following distance. The Smith System teaches you to aim high in steering, see the big picture, keep your eyes moving, leave an out, make sure others can see you, and maintain a space cushion. We develop your visual perceptual skills—establishing a visual lead, handling night driving and railroad crossings, spotting blind spots, and using mirrors effectively. You’ll also learn to compensate for challenges like failing eyesight, medications, physical disabilities, and license restrictions. As you progress, we dive into highway driving, including color codes, markings, entering and exiting, passing, merging, avoiding highway hypnosis, and using maps. We cover essential safety features like seat belts, airbags, and ABS brakes, plus how to keep children safe in the car. The course includes a thorough review of the Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Code: insurance and registration, accident information and reports, required equipment, inspections, traffic controls, and owner/operator responsibilities. Our six-hour drug and alcohol education gives you the facts: physical effects, blood alcohol content, serving equivalents, under-21 and repeat offenses, penalties, and legal consequences. You’ll learn safe driving in inclement weather—managing rain, ice, fog, and snow; using lights and cruise control correctly; and handling front-wheel drive, black ice, threshold braking, hydroplaning, and skids. We discuss sharing the road with other vehicles, the pros and cons of small cars, and how to interact safely with big trucks and motorcycles. In driving emergencies—brake failure, blowouts, going off road, slick surfaces, headlight failure—we give you practical strategies to stay safe. We also help you make smart choices about vehicle purchase (new or used), considering style, size, economy, insurance costs, safety features, leasing, and even depreciation. You’ll pick up helpful driving tips and how to prevent vehicle abuse through safe practices, preventative maintenance, tire inspection, alignment, and choosing the right tires. Plus, we explore the operation of the internal combustion engine and drive train, car maintenance like fluid checks, octane differences, identifying problems, automotive first aid, and winterizing. Finally, we guide you through insurance essentials—premiums, how accidents affect rates, Massachusetts coverage, and what to do after an accident—and wrap up with a final examination to solidify your knowledge.
