Overview
Our Mission
Our mission is to reduce preventable injuries and save lives through highly effective safety and health training, professional testing, and monitoring. We promote safety in every phase of life — at home, on the road, in schools, businesses, industrial facilities, and government. We bring people and businesses together to prevent mishaps, injuries, fatalities, and the costs they cause.
Our Vision
Our vision is people living and working safely, actively protecting the safety and health of those around them.
Our Story
Founded by concerned citizens in 1953, the Florida Safety Council — a non-profit organization — was created to make roads safer. The first office at 37 E. Pine Street in Orlando, then called the Orange County Citizens Safety Council, focused mainly on traffic safety. Today, with classrooms and driving ranges throughout Central Florida, 20 driver education vehicles, entire departments devoted to workplace safety and behavioral modification, and more than 100 instructors, we are the region’s premier safety training agency. We now promote safety across every phase of life, uniting people and businesses to prevent injuries, fatalities, and their costs.
How We Are Supported
Our funding comes from our safety training services and programs, membership dues, safety product sales, and contributions. Each year we host the Annual Golf Classic; proceeds provide free safety training to those in need and support community safety programs. As a private, non-profit, non-governmental organization, we rely primarily on student tuition and corporate memberships to power our mission.
Driver Improvement Programs
Traffic safety is the cornerstone of our education and training initiatives. Our Driver Improvement Programs encourage safe, courteous driving by strengthening defensive driving skills and awareness. We offer programs for individuals, commercial drivers, truck drivers, and mature drivers, as well as one-on-one driving lessons and high school driver education. We also provide the Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education course required for all first-time drivers in Florida.
DUI and Alcohol Related Programs
Our DUI programs are designed to change offender behavior and reduce the risk of future DUI arrests, injuries, and deaths. State-certified evaluators and instructors help each client understand the factors that lead to risk and how to reduce it. These programs are licensed by the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles and serve Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. We work closely with the courts on Ignition Interlock Device and Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor orders. The Florida Safety Council also accepts Pretrial Diversion donations; please contact us for more information.
Workplace Safety Training
The Council offers a wide variety of safety courses and seminars designed to meet OSHA standards. These interactive sessions give participants the chance to share ideas, problems, and solutions. We also sponsor free safety and educational forums for the community. As an approved OSHA Training Institute Host Site and a provider for the nationally recognized Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS) program, we deliver high-quality training.
Youth Related Programs
Recognizing the need to address driving behaviors and behavior management for young people, we created programs targeting drivers and passengers under 25, teens with anger management issues, and those with impulsive behaviors such as shoplifting, bullying, criminal mischief, and property destruction.
Specialty and Online Programs
We provide an array of specialty online programs, including safe boating, corporate services, occupational safety classes, and responsible alcohol sales training. Detailed program descriptions are available on our website.
Public Education & Awareness
We promote safety and mishap prevention through our speakers bureau, literature, and multi-media public awareness campaigns. The Safety Council is an approved Continuing Education provider for DUI certified staff, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, and for the Statewide Public Guardianship Office.
United Safety Council’s Occupational Safety Institute
Our Occupational Safety Institute offers hands-on safety education, OSHA compliance training, and broader topics such as safety program development, culture, and motivation. We deliver courses on OSHA training, specialty topics, customized training, and fleet safety. As a client or member of the Occupational Safety Institute, you are assured quality, effective workplace safety education and training. Three membership levels are available for individuals or organizations, helping you maximize resources and enjoy additional benefits.
