Allan Cantor founded the first Cantor’s Driving School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1976. At the time, he was a father of four and taught history at Overbrook High School in West Philadelphia. What began as part-time weekend instruction quickly grew, as Allan became the go-to driving teacher for teens across the area.
Allan stood out as an exceptional instructor. He brought a warm, approachable energy to every lesson and connected easily with his students. He was even known for pausing to grab a classic Philadelphia cheesesteak during a long drive, a tradition his students loved. While the decades have changed since the 1970s, the heart of Cantor’s Driving School has never shifted: it has always been built on family, community, and safety.
As the business expanded into the surrounding suburbs, the next generation stepped in. Allan’s youngest son, Frank, learned the trade directly from his father and eventually grew the school into four states: Pennsylvania, Florida, Nevada, and Arizona. Today, Frank and his wife, Cheri, own and operate Cantor’s Driving School, proudly continuing the family tradition. They remain committed to teaching the core principles of safe driving: respect for the road, respect for other drivers, and awareness of outside distractions.
