Overview
Mission and Vision
Our mission is to reduce preventable injuries and save lives through highly effective safety and health training, professional testing, and monitoring. We promote safety in every environment, whether at home, on the road, in schools, or across business and government settings. The Florida Safety Council brings communities and businesses together to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities while lowering the associated financial and human costs. Our vision is a society where everyone lives and works safely, actively protecting the health and well-being of those around them.
Our History
Founded in 1953 by concerned citizens, the Florida Safety Council began as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a clear goal: making our roads safer. Originally named the Orange County Citizens Safety Council, our first office opened at 37 E. Pine Street in Orlando with a primary focus on traffic safety. Decades later, we have grown into a premier safety training agency. We now operate classrooms and driving ranges throughout Central Florida, maintain a fleet of 20 driver education vehicles, run dedicated workplace safety and behavioral modification departments, and employ more than 100 certified instructors.
Operations and Funding
As a private, nonprofit, and nongovernmental organization, we sustain our mission through student tuition, corporate memberships, safety product sales, and community contributions. Each year, we also host a Golf Classic, with all proceeds funding free safety training for individuals in need and supporting local safety initiatives.
Driver Improvement Programs
Traffic safety remains the cornerstone of our educational initiatives. Our driver improvement courses are designed to build defensive driving skills, increase roadway awareness, and encourage courteous habits. We offer tailored programs for individual motorists, commercial and truck drivers, and mature drivers. In addition, we provide one-on-one driving lessons, high school driver education, and the state-mandated Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course for all first-time Florida drivers.
DUI and Alcohol-Related Programs
Our DUI programs focus on behavioral change to reduce the risk of future offenses, injuries, and fatalities. State-certified evaluators and instructors work individually with each client to address risk factors and promote responsible choices. Licensed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, we provide these services across Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. We also partner with local courts on ignition interlock device and continuous remote alcohol monitoring requirements. For those interested in supporting our pretrial diversion services, please visit our website to learn how to contribute.
Workplace Safety Training
We offer a wide range of interactive, OSHA-compliant courses and seminars that allow professionals to share challenges and develop practical safety solutions. Beyond standard training, we host free community safety forums and serve as an approved OSHA Training Institute Host Site. We are also an authorized provider for the nationally recognized Certified Occupational Safety Specialist program.
Youth Education and Behavior Programs
Recognizing the unique challenges young people face, we offer targeted courses for drivers and passengers under the age of 25. Our youth programs address anger management and impulsive behaviors, including shoplifting, bullying, vandalism, and property destruction, helping teens develop better decision-making skills and safer habits.
Specialty and Online Training
We provide flexible online and specialty courses covering safe boating, corporate safety services, occupational health, and responsible alcohol sales. Detailed descriptions and enrollment information for these programs are available on our website.
Public Education and Professional Development
Through our speakers bureau, educational literature, and multimedia campaigns, we actively promote mishap prevention and community awareness. We also serve as an approved continuing education provider for DUI program staff, licensed mental health counselors, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, and the Statewide Public Guardianship Office.
