Overview

Founded in 1974 by Kirk Severson, the Motorcycle Rider Training Center is proud to be the oldest motorcycle rider training facility in the United States. Kirk taught the very first Motorcycle Safety Foundation class that same year, when he was hired by the Applied Science Association—a research firm contracted by the MSF and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct an administrative and feasibility study on motorcycle rider training curriculum. The recommendations from that study were incorporated into what became the core curriculum of the MSF courses we know today. Kirk also holds advanced training in accident investigation through NHTSA. We’ve operated out of the same education facility since day one. Located on the southeast corner of 6th Avenue Freeway and Kipling in Lakewood, Colorado, on the Jefferson County Schools Training Facility campus, our site offers a non-threatening, stress-free environment designed for quality learning. Our facility features two dedicated full-size training ranges—recently paved and professionally painted—a climate-controlled classroom, real restrooms, and a large fleet of new model motorcycles. At the heart of our success is our teaching philosophy, our commitment to customer service, and a genuine desire to know each student. We go the extra mile to ensure every rider fully understands and can safely demonstrate the skills needed for everyday riding. All of our RiderCoaches are certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation and the State of Colorado, and they bring the experience, patience, thoroughness, and dedication necessary to train students effectively in a supportive environment. These are just some of the qualities that set us apart from other rider education programs.

The weekend course schedule uses what is known as a 21/2 day training format. However, only a portion of each day is used to accomplish the approximate 15 hour curriculum 3 hours Friday evening, about 6.5 hours on Saturday and 5.5 hours on Sunday. The weekday course schedule utilizes a full 2 day format running from about 8:00am - 5:00pm both days including a one hour break for lunch. • Advance RiderCourse (ARC)

The Advanced RiderCourse is designed for experienced riders of all types of bikes. It is a one-day course consisting of approximately 3.5 hours of classroom activities and 4.5 hours of riding activities. The classroom activities are used to introduce new techniques which typically are used more by a sport bike rider than a cruiser or touring bike rider. However, these techniques can be very beneficial to all motorcyclists in learning new ways to negotiate curves more effectively and safely. Activities include a detailed group discussion on selecting better lines through turns, better braking techniques, and better body positioning on the motorcycle. Additional emphasis is given to rider development in the areas of self-assessment, decision making, risk management, and rider behavior.
