I’m John Cullington. My driving instruction career began in 1984 in San Diego, where I worked as a licensed instructor for California’s largest driving school. The training I received was disappointingly shallow—but that shortcoming turned out to be a blessing. It forced me to think beyond the typical driving school playbook. I realized just how unprepared I’d been, and I got curious: Why do so many drivers crash, and what would actually prevent those accidents? After six months of trying to make outdated methods work, I stumbled on the first real clue one day during a lesson with a student.
